This is a classic tip, available anywhere, but here we go anyway.

I prefer to have Numerical Signal Strength instead of signal Strength in Dots with my iPhone. I’ve had this configured since 3GS times, and it will work on your iPhone 5 too.

To enable being able to switch between Numerical Signal Strength and Signal Strength Dots, you need to:

  1. Place a phonecall to *3001#12345#*, thus taking you to the Field Test Mode.
  2. You will immediately see the Numerical Signal Strength at the top-left corner of your iPhone.
  3. Hold down the Power-button, until you get the “Slide to Power Off” -notification.
  4. Let go of the Power-button, and instead hold down the Home button.

You are now transported back to the Home screen, with your Numerical Signal Strength enabled.

If you wish to switch to the dots, or if, by accident, during rebooting / upgrading, you’re taken back to the dot signal strength display-mode, just tap on the dots and your iPhone will switch to Numerical Signal Strength.
